During her fulltime career at the hospital, she was given the nickname “Tiny” by a medical doctor due to her short stature. The nickname stuck since in 1963 her husband and her opened a grocery store on E. Biddle St. in West Chester and named it “Tiny’s”. The business was open every day which they shared the burden along with some of the children when available. It was sold in 1976 to allow her and Frank to travel, relax and help many working parents with there the needs of their young children in her neighborhood. She acquired other nicknames as a result Mrs. D., Momma D and Little Mary.
Once widowed, Mary dedicated her life to her family and service. In particular the Chester County Hospital which she loved dearly. At the age of 88 she survived open heart surgery with very long odds at the hospital and was given another nickname by the medical staff “Miraculous Mary”. She volunteered and worked part-time at the hospital gift shop till age 90. Also, she was an active member of the Marshalltown Branch of the Chester County Auxiliary and a volunteer at the annual Chester County Day fundraiser in multiple capacities. She also worked many Election Days at her local voting poll. She loved her community and her Phillies.
Mary always lived her life with concerns for others and giving back. Her infectious spirit, love of family & friends and curiosity of news events and people’s lives never went away. Her love for cooking was apparent for anyone who had the pleasure of experiencing one of her meals. She will be missed by many.
